Please help us conduct the Female Math Course so that deserving women can get a high school equivalency certificate...get into college (without having to waste time and money on remedial math classes)...get a better job.  Thanks so very much!

The materials described below have been "field tested" in classrooms with thousands of people from all over New York City.  Our students are exceedingly smart and ambitious individuals (male and female) whose feedback in the classrooms and on our Student Satisfaction Questionnaire has been invaluable.  ("Yo!  Just show us the steps!"  "Yo!  There needs to be more problems like these, so we can really practice long division."  "Yo! List all the rules [of divisibility] so we can use them as we get better.")  If you use them as instructed, you'll be as successful as they are in their chosen careers.

The Construction And Skilled Trades Selection System, CAST, is a battery of skill and ability tests designed and validated by the Edison Electric Institute, EEI, to aid in the selection of candidates across a wide variety of construction and skilled trades occupations.  This test battery measures skills and abilities that are critical for effective job performance. There are four CAST tests:
Graphic Arithmetic,
Mathematical Usage, Mechanical Concepts, Reading for Comprehension.
In the spring of 2011, the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) asked Helicon, Inc. to develop a boot camp to help people prepare for the CAST Battery. "Anyone in the energy industry who has tried to hire skilled workers knows that one of the biggest problems is finding candidates able to pass the pre-employment tests, particularly the sections involving math. In fact, more than half of those who take the test fail it, for lack of adequate math skills."  CEWD Get Into Energy Update (September 2011), "Coming Soon:  Utility Industry Math Boot Camp to Help CEWD Members Boost Applicants' Skills."  Recently, the Utility Industry Math Boot Camp was used at North Georgia Technical College; and the class achieved an 85% pass rate. Previous classes had never exceeded a 65 percent pass rate.  To read more about the Boot Camp, go to our About Us page.

The Utility Industry Math Boot Camp for the CAST Battery, a comprehension curriculum, was designed to help participants prepare for the CAST tests. Several items from the Boot Camp have been made available to individuals and can be found on the CAST Test Prep page:

•     Student Mathematics Manual

•     Mathematical Usage Practice Tests

•     List of Resources for the Mechanical Concepts Test

Many industries (construction trades, manufacturing, healthcare, utilities, tailoring, surveying, engineering) require workers to be able to "read" and/or use rulers or measuring tapes.  Unfortunately, it's not a skill that's taught properly in schools anymore.  However, people can—thousands already have!!!—teach themselves in no time with our How to "Read" a Ruler Workbook.

People need superior command of the times tables so that they can follow discussions and demonstrations in math classes (learn a concept); and then, so that they can do a sufficient number of practice problems as homework (master the concept).  To acquire this command, people can use two Day of Remediation-Math workbooks and a comprehensive study guide:
•  Miscellaneous Arithmetic Drills
•  Miscellaneous Arithmetic Exercises
•  Study Guide
